Officials Get First Look At $25M City Schools' Budget - Greeneville Sun

The Greeneville City Board of Education held a workshop Sunday to discuss funding plans for the coming fiscal year. The system is projecting slight growth in local sales and property tax revenues and in Basic Education Program (BEP) money from the State of Tennessee, which provides the bulk of the system's funds. In addition to mandated expenses like textbooks and a new full-sized bus, board members are hoping to support a 5 percent raise for all certified employees and continuation of a Spanish language program at Greeneville Middle School. The state is providing funds for a 4 percent raise for all teachers supported by BEP funds, which factor in student attendance. However, the city system, like others across the state, employs more teachers than the program provides, Director of Schools Dr. Linda Stroud said. The initial proposal discussed Sunday extended that 4 percent raise to all of the system's certified teachers. During discussion, though, board members indicated they would prefer a 5 percent raise, citing the lack of a recurring raise for educators since the 2012-13 school year. For 2015-16, the GCS budget will anticipate 1. 5 percent growth in local property and sales tax revenues. Source: www.greenevillesun.com
