SF, San Jose ultimate Frisbee teams put new spin on rivalry - SFGate
To find the Bay Area’s only San Francisco-San Jose sports rivalry, you might have to head to Oakland. At Laney College , just south of Lake Merritt, two local ultimate Frisbee teams duked it out Saturday night, entertaining several hundred fans with a fast-paced, offense-heavy style of play. The budding rivalry in the sport, a hybrid of soccer and football in which players holding the disc can’t advance and goals are scored by passing the disc into the end zone, is brought to the Bay Area courtesy of the American Ultimate Disc League. Its two local teams, the San Francisco FlameThrowers and San Jose Spiders, can be found playing at local community college campuses. Many players also represent club teams, which travel the country to play weekend tournaments and are less franchise-oriented. One such club team, Revolver, lays claim to a number of local AUDL players, meaning that the San Francisco-San Jose matchups are as much games between friends as they are heated clashes between rivals. Club players also playing for the Spiders tend to play on the offensive side, Dallman added. “When we’re at (Revolver) practice on Saturday, we’re playing against them,” he said.
