On August 2, 1876—139 years ago today--James Butler Hickok, better known as “Wild Bill” Hickok, was gunned down by Texas desperado Jack McCall in a Dakota Territory saloon. Hickok, who was playing poker at the time of the shooting, had his back to the door. Hickok usually sat with his back to the wall, but the only seat available when he joined the game that night put his back to the door.
