GM, UAW to make 'major manufacturing announcement' in Flint - MLive.com

FLINT, MI – General Motors and United Auto Workers officials will make a "major manufacturing announcement" regarding the Flint Assembly plant on Tuesday, officials announced. Officials are expected to gather for an event from 10-11 a. m. Tuesday at Flint Assembly, 3100 Van Slyke Road. Built in 1947, Flint Assembly is a massive, 159-acre assembly plant with more than 5 million square feet of floor space. Earlier this year, the Flint City Council gave the thumbs-up to tax abatements for a potential $161 million investment into Flint Assembly. A staff review completed by Flint's Community and Economic Development Department says GM proposes to "construct a new body shop addition and other smaller, related assembly additions to support the assembly facility. Workers build heavy-duty Chevrolet and GMC Sierra crew and regular cab trucks, and the plant is also capable of producing light-duty Chevrolet Silverado crew and regular cab trucks, according to the company's Web site. According to city documents, the 50 percent, 12-year tax abatement on the proposed improvements would cost the city and other local taxing entities an estimated $1. 9 million in the first year.
