General Motors Co. will spend $877 million on improvements at the Flint, Michigan, factory that builds large pickups including the Chevrolet Silverado, the automaker’s best-selling vehicle in the U. The Flint investment is the last under a three-year, $5. 4 billion plan GM and the United Auto Workers union announced for U. S. plants in April. “This means secured work for the people in this plant for years to come,” said Barry Campbell, chairman of UAW Local 598, which represents workers at the Flint plant. sales rose 17 percent for the Chevrolet pickup and 9 percent for the GMC truck this year through July. A joint venture in China said this year that it plans to spend $16 billion by 2020 to expand in that market, and GM in March said it will put $5 billion into plants in Mexico.
