The 17802N is a Denso design Heavy Duty upgrade unit.
Because Denso uses a different gear reduction ratio than the Ford(Visteon) and Mitsubishi starters, they use a different size pinion gear to achieve the greater performance, thus a different tooth count.
This size difference is adjusted for in the machining/manufacturing of the starter, so while the pinion looks a difference size and tooth count, its position in the relation to the mounting is offset to match OEM fitment.
The mounting pattern matches the 2 bolt Ford(Visteon) and replaces the 3 bolt Mitsubishi and the “third” bolt hole is not used or needed, due to the stronger material of the housing.
The Ford transmission housing is made to accept either the two bolt of three bolt starters.
