Man takes wild ride to retrieve stolen truck - La Crosse Tribune

Dwight Zietlow said a profound sense of relaxation and calm came over him as he was lying in the bed of a stolen pickup truck hurtling down a rural road east of Coon Valley at 70 mph, Friday afternoon. “I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I never thought I would die this way, I thought I would die of old age,” Zietlow, 55, of Viroqua, said. Zietlow’s pickup truck was stolen in Viroqua three-and-a-half weeks ago. Zietlow kept looking for his truck and came across it as he approached Coon Valley on Friday afternoon. In what Vernon County Sheriff John Spears characterized as a “bizarre” circumstance, Zietlow, a self-proclaimed “crazy old hippie,” eventually hopped in the back of the truck, a Ford F-150, in Coon Valley after he blocked it at an intersection... Zietlow said he had a lot of experience riding in the back of trucks from his youth and during the harrowing ride he successfully braced himself while throwing items out of the truck in order to create a trail and draw attention to law enforcement. After staying in the back of the truck in a run between Coon Valley and Westby to Esofea, the driver gave up. Zietlow said the truck was in a field and it was speeding up. He saw something.
