German-Jefferson residents locked in sewer district debate - Southernminn.com

In 2004, residents on Lake Washington, also located in Le Sueur County, chose to have their lake sewered with a pipe running to a wastewater treatment plant at the airport just outside of Mankato. Residents of German-Jefferson saw what they were doing at the nearby lake and felt property owners of the four lakes should form their own sewer district. THIS WEEK — Pipe or no pipe. Either everyone chips or everyone finds their own way to comply with state standards. NEXT WEEK — Proponents say the sewer line from the lakes area to St. Peter is a necessity and will keep waters clean. Residents of the German-Jefferson lakes area may know this better than anyone, as opposing groups continue a decade-long debate over how to dispose of sewage, and keep it out of the lakes and the faucets in the four-lake area. The struggle has boiled down to one central argument: pipe or no pipe. Either everyone chips in for a Le Sueur County-installed sewer pipe to a St. Peter wastewater treatment plant, or everyone finds their own way to comply with state standards.
