Scoring the game: Stanforth a regular face at Kernel games - Daily Republic
The 66-year-old surveyed the Corn Palace from the seat he's obtained since 1988 and readied himself for another basketball season as the official scorer. "Basketball season rolls around, and it's just natural to go back to the Corn Palace and sit at the scorer's table," Stanforth said during halftime of the Mitchell High School boys basketball game against Pierre on Dec. Stanforth, now on his 27th year as official scorer in Mitchell, has been involved with the sport since he could walk. Stanforth was a coach for 43 seasons -- 32 boys seasons and 11 girls -- with the first four years in Menno, 12 in Flandreau and the last 19 in Mitchell. Stanforth moved to Mitchell in 1987, and began as the official scorer the next school year for both the boys and girls basketball teams. Their seasons were played separately, with the boys in the winter, and the girls in the fall. Then in 2002, boys and girls basketball were switched to both be played in the winter. "Just being competent and making sure we do our job correctly," she said, adding both she and Stanforth have started working Dakota Wesleyan University games this season.
