- Diesel exhaust fluid heater commonly called the "DEF Heater", this unit is located in the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tank and actually contains the pickup tube for the reductant pump module, an electric heating element, a temperature sensor, and an electrode-type level sensor. Ford terms the whole unit the "reductant heater and sender assembly". Diesel exhaust fluid is a non-hazardous combination of de-ionized water and urea that helps reduce the emission of heavy-duty vehicles.
- DEF reservoir is a reductant heater that enables SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to function at low temperatures. DEF freezes easily and needs to be melted in the shortest possible time for SCR to reduce the amount of Nitrogen Oxides and release them into exhaust system lowering the concentration of nitrogen oxide in diesel emissions from engine.
