Visiting Our Past: Pulliam on deer, drinkin' & more - Asheville Citizen-Times

I promised there was more to follow, and here it is... • Always busy: Me and Toughie McMahon used to go up there (off Reed Street) and cut Christmas trees. " The clerk said, "Where to. " The drunk said, "Don't make no difference. • Jim the deer: I've slept probably 50 times at the Biltmore House. I grew up with Harold and Ruel Auston (sons of Biltmore Estate ranger, Claude Auston). I called Ruel just two weeks ago and asked him, "How did Jim die. • Hoboes of Eastview: You know where Preacher McCurry's church is. Off Eastview Avenue. He owned all of that down the street where you drive in. We had our own smokehouse. We had caves on the back of our property, and hoboes would stay in those caves, coming off the railroad, and I'd take food over there when I was 8 or 9 years old. People used to keep food on the back of the stove in the warmers on top. My daddy said, "The best way, son, for these hoboes to get food is for them to have them a bag full of something and go knock on a door and say, 'The lady. Source: www.citizen-times.com
