High-mileage oil has additives that are supposed to keep seals more pliable, stop leaks and reduce oil consumption — although I’m not sure if it’s marketing or factual. Although I’m cheap, I still spend the extra money for synthetic oil in my eight-year-old car, but I'm not sure if I would spend $20 more for “high-mileage” oil. The Rubber Manufacturers Association (a trade group for tire manufacturers) believes the service life of a tire is affected by many factors that are independent of the chronological age of the tire alone.
