Local grocery store owner SVT LLC will pay $200,000 to a class of women who were denied night-crew stocking positions at Ultra Foods in Merrillville, the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Friday. Highland-based SVT LLC also owns Strack & Van Til and Town & Country Food Market grocery stores. "SVT LLC strives to treat all people equally and is committed to providing equal employment opportunities for qualified workers," Rex Mudge, the company's vice president of human resources, said in a statement. EEOC Regional Attorney Laurie Young said in a statement, "Ultra Foods adhered to antiquated gender-based notions of how it should fill its night-crew stocker position. The consent decree will remain in effect until July 2018, and requires Ultra Foods not to discriminate or retaliate, keep all required hiring records and train supervisors and managers who play any role in hiring. The company also must ensure that one of every four night-crew stocking openings at Ultra's Merrillville store on Broadway is offered to a woman who participated in the EEOC's lawsuit and still wants such a position, institute a protocol to ensure...
