Elderly Petaluma couple die in Highway 121 head-on crash - Santa Rosa Press Democrat

An elderly Petaluma couple died Wednesday morning following a head-on crash on rural Highway 121, according to the CHP. Fay Steinhart, 72, died in the collision, and Richard “Dick” Steinhart, 78, was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his life-threatening injuries. The aftermath of the 9 a. m. collision blocked the highway in both directions for four hours while crash investigators gathered evidence and the wreckage was cleared, CHP Officer Anna Paulson said. CHP officers still are attempting to determine how the crash occurred and are asking witnesses to come forward, Paulson said. Headed north was Richard Steinhart, driving a 2010 Ford Fusion, with his wife in the passenger seat. Paulson said Fay Steinhart was killed in the crash. Officers found the Silverado blocking the northbound lane and the Ford up on a right shoulder embankment. The busy route, which connects the Petaluma, Sonoma and Napa areas, reopened just before 1 p. m. The pickup driver had minor injuries and declined medical treatment. Word of the couple’s death Wednesday had reached east Petaluma neighbors and Dick Steinhart’s co-workers and friends at Rooster Run Golf Course, where he worked part-time as a course marshal.
