The keel of the US Navy's (USN's) second Gerald R Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier (CVN) was laid on 22 August. John F Kennedy (CVN 79) is being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding division in Newport News, Virginia. According to the Department of Defense, John F Kennedy is to replace USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the lead ship of the USN's in-service class of CVNs, which is due to be withdrawn from service in 2025.
