“The fire trucks and ambulances are special equipment that are job-specific, so it’s not like going out and buying a car,” Lopez said on Thursday, further noting that the new ambulances, 2016 Ford F-450s, will be designed according to plans that... “We have to spec it out, and when we were proposing these vehicles, we were not planning for use of that vehicle this year, but how that vehicle will sustain for five years in growth of the department,” Lopez added. “The need was there to replace vehicles — ambulances and fire trucks — to start moving the older units out and replace them with a new fleet. In the meantime, Lopez said work will soon begin on identifying a new for new fire trucks. “The city, through this program, is purchasing ambulances and fire trucks at the same time through a lease purchase that gets us state-of-the-art equipment we’ll be able to use for the next five to eight years,” Lopez said. “The commissioners have seen the importance of implementing this program, and they have decided for this year we will have that start (purchasing new ambulances).
