Woman in need wins free refurbished car - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Sharyl Cherwa just won a 17-year-old Ford Taurus with 140,000 miles on it, and she couldn’t be happier. The 59-year-old Poway woman emerged over the weekend as the recipient of the old but smooth-running 1998 white sedan, given away by TJ Crossman’s Auto Repair in Vista. The car giveaway was part of “Wheels to Prosper,” a national program in which individual auto shops fix up a used car and give it to a deserving recipient in their area. This year was Crossman’s first foray into the giveaway, and his contest drew roughly 50 nominations of potential recipients. “I felt bad announcing the winner, because I felt bad that I didn’t have anything to give the other contestants. Crossman bought the Taurus for $350, and his crew has put 50 hours into fixing it up, dropping in a new radiator, motor mounts, tires, brakes, even fixing the air conditioner. It’s intended to be hassle-free and maintenance-free (save for oil changes, which Crossman’s shop will do), for 30,000 miles. Crossman got 15 letters nominating Cherwa, highlighting her dedication to her church, Maranatha Chapel, as well as her heart for helping others, including feeding the homeless.
