Child injured in double fatal crash remains critical - LA Daily News

A 4-year-old girl remained in critical condition Monday from injuries she suffered in a two-vehicle crash in Van Nuys that killed her father and older sister, authorities said. The girl and her 1-year-old brother, who suffered minor injuries, were both being treated at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, said California Highway Patrol officer Leland Tang. Their mother, Juana Sifuentes, 40, was being treated at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills for moderate injuries. Juana Sifuentes was in fair condition Monday, Providence spokeswoman Patricia F. Aidem said in an email. Killed in the crash were Efrain Sifuentes Hurtado, 37, and his daughter, Luz Yanet Sifuentes, 6. When firefighters saw the extent of the injuries and damage to the family’s 1992 Ford Explorer, they summoned the mayor’s Crisis Response Team to help... Three team members went to Northrigde and five went to Providence because that’s where the mother was, said Joseph Avalos, the unit’s director. The team also helped the family activate its support network by contacting a priest, pastor and other relatives to help spread word about the tragedy. He could not say what Hurtado did for a living but noted the family lived in an apartment building on Vanowen Street. Source: www.dailynews.com
