MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN. 1938 McCoy secures a permit to operate permanent rope tow on McGee Mountain. 1941 McCoy obtains a roving permit for his own portable rope tow powered by a Ford Model A engine and starts skiing Mammoth Mountain. 1948 McCoy gets a temporary special-use permit for a permanent location, on today's Broadway ski run. 1953 Forest Service awards McCoy permit to operate permanently on Mammoth Mountain. 1955 Thanksgiving Day – Mammoth Mountain's first chairlift opens with skiers crowding in lift lines for two to three hours. 1966 First gondola to the top of the mountain opens. 1979-1985 Nine new chairlifts open up more of the mountain. 1986 McCoy purchases nearby June Mountain. 1996 McCoy brings in resort company Intrawest as a partner to upgrade Mammoth into a four-season destination resort. 2003 The Village, Mountain Center and Village Gondola officially open. 2006 McCoy sells Mammoth for $365 million to Starwood resort chain.
