Takata airbag recall: NHTSA trying to remedy parts shortage - MLive.com

DETROIT, MI - A federal safety group said it is trying to remedy the apparent shortage of replacement parts tied to the largest automotive recall in American history. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is looking to hold a formal legal proceeding to coordinate and accelerate a program for the recall of 33. 8 million vehicles with airbags made by Takata Corp. NHTSA suggests it could order manufacturers to "prioritize certain vehicles or certain regions in its allocation of replacement parts," for example. Several readers have said their vehicles are affected by the airbag recall, but dealerships have told them they cannot immediately get parts in to fix potentially faulty airbags. The driver- and passenger-side airbags that have been linked to at least six deaths, including five in the U. S. , and more than 100 injuries after the airbags exploded and sent metal pieces flying at drivers and passengers. Most, if not all, of the issues with the airbags have occurred in humid environments, which in part is why Takata had at first resisted a nationwide recall. A service supervisor at a local Honda dealership said he's been replacing the part on Civics and Accords, but has had to wait for a replacement on Pilot SUVs. Source: www.mlive.com
