ROAD LESS TRAVELLED: Twins complete course - TheChronicleHerald.ca

I took my first driving lesson in the spring of 1967. I was 16½ at the time and had already had a driving license for six months. The interesting thing about the 10-day driving course through the Easter Holidays was I got paid to take it. Identical twin Larry and I were advised about an opportunity to sign on for the course during one of our weekly militia training sessions... The classic 1950s era Jeep would obviously be a snap and so would the ¾-ton Standard Military Pattern (SMP) cargo carrier. The ¾-ton, or M37CDN, was manufactured using components of the Dodge Power Wagon. The primitive M37CDN had a two-speed transfer case and a bone-crunching, four-speed manual transmission. I’d driven Dad’s Mercury 350 double-rack glass truck lots of times along with plenty of trucks at the local Lincoln Mercury dealership where Larry and I were part-time lot boys.
