POLICE BEAT - July 23 - Gustine Press-Standard

Newman police said Martin J. Marquez, 34, of Gustine, was arrested July 18 on charges stemming from the theft of a wallet that a customer had left on the counter of a downtown store the previous day. Police said Marquez was identified as a suspect after store surveillance video was reviewed. Authorities said Marquez was booked on multiple charges, including felony charges of petty theft with priors and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger. Two Newman school campuses were vandalized with graffiti in incidents reported July 13, police said. The damage to each campus was estimated at $2,000. The paint was similar to that used to vandalize Yolo Middle School and a number of vehicles in the Inyo and T street area a few days earlier, police said. Police said vandals damages a sewage drain pipe at a property in the 1400 block of P Street, causing damage estimated at $300. The incident was reported July 13. Vehicle theft. Police said a 2006 Chevrolet pickup and trailer containing a Yamaha quad runner and semi-automatic rifle were reported stolen July 16 from the 600 block of Waxwing. Newman police received 66 calls for service, reported 79 officer-initiated incidents, handled 22 cases, made 11 arrests and issued 19 traffic citations from July 13-19, according to the department’s activity report.
