POLICE BEAT - July 2 - Gustine Press-Standard

Police said David Lerma, 71, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving as well as a felony charge of resisting arrest. According to police reports, Lerma refused the commands of officers, tried to get into his vehicle and threatened officers. Police said two vehicle thefts were reported last weekend. A 2004 Chevrolet Malibu was reported stolen June 28 from the 800 block of Fig Lane. Police said the vehicle was recovered intact on June 29 at Kern and Q streets. Police said a vehicle removed from the Newman Meat Market parking lot on June 22 by a tow company was determined to have been stolen June 16 out of Modesto. Newman police received 80 calls for service, reported 79 officer-initiated incidents, handled 28 cases, made 19 arrests and issued 22 traffic citations from June 22-28, according to the department’s activity report. Gustine police said a vehicle theft victim who gave chase to his stolen vehicle last week abandoned the pursuit after reportedly being fired upon by occupants of a third vehicle who intervened in the incident. Police Chief Doug Dunford said the June 22 incident started when the victim left his Chevrolet Silverado idling unattended at his Manor Avenue residence. After the pickup was stolen, Dunford said, a neighbor alerted the victim and the two gave chase in the neighbor’s vehicle. Source: www.westsideconnect.com
