SPU official struck, killed while riding bike in Central Wash. - KOMO News

- A 62-year-old academic officer at Seattle Pacific University was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle near Mattawa in Central Washington, a Grant County sheriff's spokesman said. Deputies and medics responded to the scene, on Road 24 Southwest just east of Highway 243, at about 7:20 a. m. after receiving a report of a serious crash involving a car and a bicycle. A preliminary investigation found that Gelderman was heading east on his bicycle on Road 24 Southwest when he was struck from behind by a 2005 Chrysler 300 driven by 38-year-old Juana Hernandez of Mattawa. Sheriff's investigators said the rising sun interfered with Hernandez’s field of vision and was a contributing factor in the collision. Gelderman most recently served as a certification officer with Seattle Pacific University. Source: www.komonews.com
