Two hurt in two separate crashes at I-35/Highway 33 junction in Cloquet - Duluth News Tribune

In both cases, a vehicle turning from southbound Highway 33 to the ramp to northbound I-35 failed to yield and pulled in front of another vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 33, having just exited I-35. It’s been the site of many collisions... Neil Dickenson, a Minnesota State Patrol spokesman, was on the scene at Thursday’s crash. Dickenson said motorists attempting to turn from southbound Highway 33 onto northbound I-35 should be cautious. Cross-traffic there often is traveling at high speeds as vehicles use the curved, hilly ramp that merges from northbound I-35 to northbound Highway 33. “It’s people misjudging distance, too,” Dickenson said. In Thursday morning’s crash, the Patrol said a 2006 Saturn Ion driven by Alexandra Hopper, 20, of Cloquet was making a left turn from southbound Highway 33 to northbound I-35 at about 10:40 a. m. and pulled out in front of a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup... A passenger in the Ion — Krysta Diver, 21, of Cloquet — was transported to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth, where she was reported in good condition Thursday night. One of the vehicles also caught fire but a passerby had most of the fire extinguished before firefighters arrived, Schroeder said. “As I was pulling up, I saw a gentleman running up with an extinguisher,” Schroeder said.
