Center for Global Studies director to retire in June - Thehour.com
The Center for Global Studies director will conclude her 35-year career in education this June, when she retires from Norwalk Public Schools. I loved being in school and I was one of those kids that would pretend to play school,” she said. “I thought I would teach elementary school but I wound up teaching high school. At the Center for Global Studies, a school within a school at Brien McMahon High School, McCarthy found an ideal situation. It’s also a small school, which I really love. McCarthy became acquainted with CGS in 1989, when her daughter entered the school as a freshman during its first year of operation. Back then, the school was known as the Japanese Center for Study Abroad. The school eventually evolved into an international studies magnet school specializing in Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. School choice is a growing movement now in education. When McCarthy came to CGS eight years ago, she became the school’s first full-time director. This school requires a full-time administrator and I think my presence here created a lot of stability,” she said. “It made it a more coherent and cohesive program because we had a full time administrator and we were able to grow the program that way.
