Ball players victims of theft after donating turf to Avens - My Yellowknife Now

Yellowknife fastball players who donated leftover turf to Avens now face losing hundreds of dollars after a theft. Around 20 empty pallets were taken from the Tommy Forrest ballpark on Wednesday according to Rob Johnson, who plays in the city’s fastball league and was among volunteers helping to lay sod at the ballpark last weekend. Johnson told Moose FM he saw the pallets being loaded into an early 2000s black Dodge Dakota by an older gentleman and a man in his early twenties. Johnson told us the theft felt like “kind of a slap in the face” after a weekend of hard work by dozens of volunteers to resurface the downtown ball diamond, which now boasts grass for the first time in its 50-year history. Ball players donated several truckloads of unused turf from last weekend’s resurfacing to nearby Avens for use on its property. “They had a little bit of sod left over and touched base to see if they could donate it to us,” said Avens representative Rebecca Alty.
