At 109, Garst lives faith-filled life - messenger-inquirer

Garst spent most of her life on farmland in the county. She was born south of the Green River near Station Baptist Church, where her parents would take her and her brother and two sisters to church when she was a child. She was born there in 1906 and said she could remember important dates around the turn of the century like the 1918 flu epidemic and the sinking of the Titanic. She watches and listens to television news programs intently, as her eyesight has faded with time. She's voted in every presidential election since the 19th Amendment was ratified, and she's quick to remember details of even the most up-to-date breaking news stories. Garst said she found work inspecting hubcaps for Chevrolet. Through it all, they said, she continues to live a full life. Alongside her news programs, Garst insists on never missing her Wildcats' time to shine on the court. Plain said she is an avid University of Kentucky athletics fan and even takes time to pray for the men's basketball team before games. Then comes along something that's good, like this birthday party, and I think things must be worthwhile. That's all you can do. I can still laugh, and I laugh about a lot of things.
