Calhoun County deputy saves mother, children from burning car - AL.com

A Calhoun County deputy is being hailed for his work in pulling a mother and her three children from a burning car Tuesday. Chief Deputy Matthew Wade said Deputy Benjamin Kiser was patrolling U. S. 431 in Saks at 7:28 a. m. Tuesday when he saw a red 4-door 2003 Dodge Intrepid in a ditch on its side. "As Deputy Kiser began assessing their injuries, the vehicle caught fire," Wade said. Kiser began extricating the children and mother from the vehicle while using his fire extinguisher against the flames. "The quick actions of Deputy Kiser saved the life of that mother and her three children," Wade said. The mother was airlifted to UAB Hospital, and one of the children was taken to Children's of Alabama. Wade said Kiser's actions merit the Sheriff's Office's Life Saving and Valor medals.
