With the arrival of the 45 new names announced last week, the membership stands at a whopping 866. To put that in some context, in Britain we have a population of around 64million with 866 in the second chamber. In France, 66million make do with 348 in their equivalent and over in the US somehow 318million people struggle along with just 100 representatives in their Senate. Although statistics can be manipulated to prove just about anything it is fair to say here these numbers simply do not add up. Why the glittering promotions for lifelong career politicians who have spent an entire life never having to earn a penny... Similarly, how come one of the senior Labour strategists believed to be behind the appalling “Ed Stone” idea that became a millstone around Ed Miliband’s neck gets a peerage.
