Police officer Nathan Blanford, a patrol officer who had been with the department since 2005, shot 35-year-old Deng Menyoun after he allegedly swung a flag pole at him. The community has hotly contested whether Mr Menyoun did indeed swing the pole at Officer Blanford, as witnesses insist that he did not. The dead man emigrated from Africa several years ago and lived in an apartment building around the corner from the busy intersection in Louisville where he was shot dead on Saturday.
