Car Doctor: Overdrive light comes on intermittently in 2002 Ford Explorer - The Providence Journal

Q: I have an old 2002 Ford Explorer. the truck runs great, although intermittently the overdrive light on the dash has been showing up. When the light is on, the truck doesnt run any differently and the light will reset itself when the truck is restarted. I brought the truck into a local mechanic and he stated he is 99 percent sure it is a sticking valve. Do I chance the repair with the hope that the $500 charge to replace valve doesnt lead to a $3,000 transmission repair. Have a technician scan the trucks computer for fault codes this should help them determine the cause of the problem. Have the repair shop check for a sticking idle air control motor as well as possible vacuum leaks. Although not related, it appears that your car may be subject to a recall of the computer. The recall is NHTSA 10V384000. Defroster vents only ones working on 97 Mustang A: Vacuum lines can be as complicated as wiring diagrams in todays cars. There is a vacuum reservoir tank and vacuum motor. I would first check the vacuum tank and then the vacuum motors, which are attached to the duct system. Source: www.providencejournal.com
