Pabst returns to Milwaukee roots, with a craft beer spin - USA TODAY

Pabst, brewer of the PBR so beloved by today's hipsters, is returning to its original Milwaukee location – with a new craft beer twist. Pabst Brewing Company will open a new brewery on the site of its former home in summer 2016, the company announced Wednesday. Beer lovers will be able to visit the complex for tours, to check out historical memorabilia – and, most important, to taste the beer. The original Pabst Milwaukee brewery shut down in 1996 after the owner of the much-sold company at the time, S&P Co. , contracted out production to Stroh Brewery Company's facility in La Crosse, Wis. The brewery was such an iconic part of Milwaukee's landscape that a group of Milwaukee residents banded together to try to buy Pabst back when it went on the market yet again in 2014. But it was acquired by beer entrepreneur Eugene Kashper, who... Pabst will stay true to its roots but will also hop on the craft beer trend with new small-batch beers based on Pabst's archived recipes, Kashper said. Craft beer makes up a small percentage of overall beer sales, but it's the fastest growing sector. Pabst brewers will keep up with new craft trends through old traditions, Kashper said.
