Swimmer Andy Miyares, 32, of Kendall won silver medals in the 1,500-meter open water swim and the 400-meter relay and bronze in the 800-meter freestyle during the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Miyares was featured on ESPN, which covered the eight-day event with 6,500 athletes from 165 countries in 25 sports. In preparation for the World Games, Miyares trained under Coach Luis Salazar and Olympic swimmer Robert Strauss – who also taught him to swim when he was 6-months-old and specifically helped prepare him for the open water competition. Strauss is the technical director at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach, host of the county swim games. Miyares usually trains noon-2 p. m. Saturdays at Tamiami Park with a Special Olympics program called “Baywatchers” -- started by his mother, Ana, and other Special Olympics moms 20 years ago.
