At the first Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj ... - New York Daily News

Pop music can embrace any genre — R&B, rock, reggae, funk or more. So, in theory, the second, and final, day of the Billboard Hot 100 Music Festiva - which is, centered on all things pop - might have had trouble finding a focus. In fact, the show — part of the first annual Hot 100 fest, held at Jones Beach Sunday — developed a consistent reference point early on. Namely, EDM. DJs as celebrated as Skrillex and Kygo enjoyed prominent sets. Nicki Minaj boiled her presentation down to her most club-thumping songs, while closing performer Justin Bieber ended the day with his own Skrillex collaboration. Even the classically influenced violinst Lindsay Stirling offered a Skrillex shout-out, crediting his dubstep style with influencing her ungainly mix of styles. While the EDM movement has within its wide grasp many arcane sub-genres and abstract extensions, it has also developed an increasing connection to pop. Stirling, who took the second stage, played to a far smaller crowd than the main stage attracted, a surprise considering the broad audience she has amassed with her YouTube performances. They’re all apt reference points for a star whose music takes influence of the cheesiest rock/classical amalgams ever created. Source: www.nydailynews.com
