Central Middle School will open Monday to say goodbye to a popular young teacher killed by a hit-and-run driver in Maine. The Patriot Ledger says Emily Zarnoch, 23, taught in nearly every classroom as a substitute teacher over the past year, and was hired to start a new teaching job at the school in the fall. Her funeral will be held Monday at the school she loved. Zarnoch and her boyfriend were walking hand in hand on the shoulder of a road in York, Main, when, according to police, "the next thing he knew she was just gone. Zarnoch, a middle school teacher from Quincy, had been hit by a SUV that swerved off the road and struck her, throwing her 60 feet, her boyfriend later told police in York, Maine. The driver of the car, Carolyn Lee, 21, of York, is facing a manslaughter charge in a hit-and-run death that has left the Quincy school community reeling. Zarnoch died in a New Hampshire hospital on Tuesday morning, several hours after police in York found her unconscious on the side of a road with her boyfriend, Stephen Cortez, by her side. A police affidavit filed in Springdale District Court has offered new details about the fatal crash, which occurred at about 12:30 a. m.
