Ralph Perez Martinez, 60, of Alsip, who has pleaded not guilty in the death of Mary Austgen, 76, of St. John, did not take the stand on Thursday, the eighth day of evidence in the case. During the trial, Martinez appeared to take copious notes on a legal pad and viewed each of the nearly 350 items of evidence introduced by trial supervisor Mark Watson and deputy prosecutor Michael Woods. Faruq said he initially paid Martinez about $600 to $700 for materials, then paid him additional amounts over about three weeks. He said he paid Martinez about $2,500 for the work, but Martinez told him he was couldn't complete the job because it would take two people and his helper wasn't available.
