Two injured in Thursday morning wreck in Bassett - Martinsville Bulletin

Jessica Cooke, 28, of Spencer, the motorist charged, was driving a 2012 GMC Terrain SUV west on Virginia 57 and allegedly crossed the double-solid line completely into the eastbound lane, McBride said. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound on Virginia 57. The first eastbound vehicle – a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Amber Lynch Boyce, 40, of Bassett – ran off the road to the right to avoid the GMC Terrain but the Terrain allegedly kept coming... The second eastbound vehicle on Virginia 57, a 2003 Ford Explorer SUV (which was behind the Malibu), also ran off the road to the right to avoid collision with the Terrain and there was no direct contact, McBride said. However, an axle on the Malibu and an axle on the GMC Terrain sheared off those vehicles. The axle that sheared off the Malibu came to rest on the roadside, and the axle that sheared off the Terrain hit the Ford Explorer, McBride said. The Malibu and the Terrain were totaled, and the Explorer had no visible damage, McBride said. Cooke was charged with driving under the influence of drugs based on a field sobriety test and a breath test that was negative for alcohol, McBride said. Source: www.martinsvillebulletin.com
