Murugesan one of the top singles players in the state - Edison Sentinel

Gokul Murugesan plays tennis for J. P. Stevens High School and served as captain last spring as a junior for the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) Red Division and Tournament champions. In her 27 years as Hawks coach, Ellen Pisano has named a junior captain only three times. Murugesan achieved a 15-5 dual match record against some of the best competition in New Jersey while slotted in the first singles position, including state individual title winner Josh Marchalik of East Brunswick High School. Murugesan’s team finished 21-2, including the two GMC titles. “My dad watched tennis as a kid and brought me to the local elementary school courts, and that’s how it all started,” Murugesan said. “I played soccer and baseball, but I was not that serious [about those sports], ran cross-country and track in middle school and thought I would do that in high school. Murugesan’s daily routine, aside from school, pretty much revolves around the game. He has been a regular at the Garden State Tennis Academy since 2008, working with Sanjay Sundaram, who helped Murugesan improve his game to where he turned into one of the best singles players in the state.
