Wando wins first state baseball championship - Charleston Post Courier

Six years after dropping its only previous state baseball championship attempt, Wando’s senior-laden lineup finished the job in sweeping fashion with a 6-4 Class AAAA title triumph over host J. L. Mann Wednesday. A battle of South Carolina-signed hurlers – Harrison Smith of Wando and Hank Nichols of J. L. Mann — went the way of the Warriors’ senior, who added an RBI double to help his cause. Smith gutted out all seven innings for his sixth pitching victory, stifling a couple rallies in the middle innings. “They started getting some hits and I started to labor a little bit,” said Smith, who struck out six and walked two. the Warriors’ first four runs were on a wild pitch and three errors. First baseman Tyler Ackard and Smith broke the game open with run-scoring hits in the fourth. Ackard’s RBI single chased Nichols, a tall southpaw who was touched up for six runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. But with Mann reliever Jack Stamler keeping Wando from extending the lead, the Patriots (25-6) chipped away at the lead – stringing together a pair of hits in the fourth before Smith halted the damage with a 6-3 lead.
