Ocean Speedway: Hagio doubles with Cecil, IMCA sport wins - Santa Cruz Sentinel

Watsonville >> Matt Hagio is the first driver to win two main events in one day since the turn of the century at Ocean Speedway. The Prunedale powerhouse raced 100 laps in an American stock car to claim his first Mike Cecil Memorial win and also snagged his third IMCA sport modified feature of the season Saturday. “It’s a great feeling to win a main event, but to win two in one night, and one of them being the Mike Cecil Memorial race … words can’t express how I feel,” Hagio said. “It’s great being here, seeing the fans and the drivers pay their respects to Mike,” the elder Cecil said. Hagio is the 10th driver to win in the event’s 18-year history. Hagio and Watsonville’s Tony Oliveira started from the second row and immediately moved to the front with Oliveira leading the way. The two raced one-two with the 20-year-old racer pressuring Oliveira’s Ford Mustang for the lead on every restart. On the restart on lap 54 of the 80-lap race, Hagio got the jump on Oliveira and led the final 26 laps. “This is the first time I’ve won the heat races and the main events in the same night.
