The vehicle was a 1990-something Honda Accord that had degenerated into mostly rust and adhesive Bondo putty. The Honda's eventual extinction provided an educational lesson. We offer the Honda's inspiration to the Gary Police Department during its current moment of departmentwide vehicular distress. Gary officers are primarily driving beaters these days. Their beater squad cars have bald tires. Cops should drive better cars than the drug punks they arrest. But Gary police might be seeing this travesty without deeper context. During winter, I had exited the Honda, and bent over to wipe ice from the front window. Then I noticed another car sliding down the Merrillville side street sideways. So I moved my person briskly away from the rust-embalmed Honda as the approaching young driver — her eyes very wide and panic-stricken — slid sideways into the driver's side. It was a slow-motion T-bone that crunched the driver's door and bounced the Honda about 10 feet laterally. Source: www.chicagotribune.com
