Maria Del Perez, 37, of Liberty was northbound on the highway in the southbound lanes in a 1997 Honda CR-V, with a 9-month-old child strapped into a car seat, Vaughn said. A 911 call shortly before the crash alerted emergency personnel that there was a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the highway, Vaughn said. Whitesell told the trooper he took his eyes off the road momentarily, looked up, saw the CR-V coming at him, about 15 feet away, and swerved in an attempt to miss it. “It could’ve been a whole lot worse,” Vaughn said, “a lot more serious injuries.
