A head-on collision in Palo Cedro Friday night, caused by an alleged DUI driver, killed the drivers of both vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said James York, 24, was driving his 1991 GMC pickup under the influence around 9:50 p. m. westbound in the eastbound lane of Highway 44, east of Gilbert Road, at a high rate of speed without his headlights on. Mercedes Avelar, 65, was... The pickup truck crashed head-on with the CRV and Avelar was pronounced dead on scene. "He killed himself and another party," said Neddy Nailor of the California Highway Patrol. Avelar worked as a cleaning woman in various facilities around Shasta County.
