Fairfield man rams police car, starts high-speed chase - TheReporter.Com
A 21-year-old Fairfield man was arrested after police said he led officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle into Lagoon Valley Park. The license plates on the vehicle, a gray 2004 Honda CR-V, had been replaced in an attempt to hide that it was stolen, according to Officer James Smith. The suspect, later identified as Michael Szafarek, 21, of Fairfield, proceeded to lead the officer on a high speed chase, but drove into a dead-end street and stopped, Smith said. According to Smith, when the officer exited his vehicle to contact the suspect, Szafarek revved his engine and drove straight at the officer. The officer, seeing Szafarek driving toward him, dove back into his patrol car just before Szafarek rammed it with his own car. Szafarek’s car collided with the police car with such force that the air bags inside the police car were deployed, Smith said. Szafarek was arrested on suspicion of assault on a police officer, evading a police officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and possession of heroin.
