Still plugging along - Arizona Daily Sun
It was 2011 when Ken Snapp first got news of the all-electric Nissan Leaf. Now on his second version of the car, Snapp said a part of the experience has fallen short of expectations. “I’m disappointed because three and a half years ago when I first leased a Leaf I thought within three years’ time there would be charging stations all over place and it would be much more usable,” Snapp said. Indeed, electric cars are still scarce in Flagstaff, as a lack of charging stations, limited range potential and vehicle cost have made it difficult for them to gain momentum, according to electric vehicle owners, dealers and advocates. Gas prices that are still hovering below the $3 mark, makes for even less motivation for people to consider an electric option, car dealers said. The story is similar on a national level, with plug ins making up just 0. 7 percent of car sales in 2014. Even so, the cars have a devoted local fan base that extols the benefits of electric. They will be the cell phones of a few years ago,” said Jerry Asher, a Tucson resident and electric car enthusiast who has driven through all 15 of Arizona’s counties with his electric Nissan Leaf. In 2012, the Flagstaff resident bought a Chevy Volt, which runs on an electric battery and then switches to gasoline, though he rarely needs the gas engine. Source: azdailysun.com
