Report: Hyundai to build new plant this year - Montgomery Advertiser

Hyundai will start work on a new U. S. assembly plant this year and Alabama is one of the states still competing for the project, according to South Korea's largest news agency. Quoting an unnamed source within the company, Yonhap News Agency reported that Alabama is one of the candidate states in the running for the final location. The report said the plant would be in production by May 2016 and would have an annual capacity of about 300,000 vehicles, about the same as the current Montgomery plant. Hyundai Motor America spokesman Jim Trainor said Monday that parent Hyundai Motor Co. is considering a new plant. HMA President and CEO Dave Zuchowski last month told Automotive News that the company will make a decision on where to build the plant within the next 90 days. Zuchowski said at the time he feared it may be hard to find enough properly trained workers in the Montgomery area if the company builds a second plant here. Hyundai's North American sales dropped 10 percent in May, and the car-heavy company pointed to an industry-wide shift in buying trends. Hyundai's top two sellers in North America are the Sonata and Elantra sedans, both made in Montgomery. Source: www.montgomeryadvertiser.com
