2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR - Long-Term Road Test - Car and Driver

When our long-term Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR arrived in July 2008, we were hit by a wave of sticker shock. At an as-delivered price of $41,515, the Evo exceeded the starting price of a BMW 335i. The Mitsubishi comes with a 291-hp turbocharged engine, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and one of the most sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems on the... But a great swath of hard interior plastic and a shortage of amenities such as heated seats made the Evo feel spartan for its price. The Evolution lineup starts at a more reasonable $34,335 in five-speed-manual GSR trim (or $33,710 back in 2008). But we wanted to try the new TC-SST dual-clutch gearbox that is offered only on the MR, which also includes upgrades such as Bilstein... Even though it could stand to be more aggressive off the line—Mitsubishi says the Evo MR has “launch control,” but labeling the lazy clutch engagement as such is a stretch—the car ripped from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 3 seconds when new. Skidpad grip also increased, from a strong 0. 93 g to an astonishing 0. 96, and braking from 70 to 0 mph was consistently impressive, at 158 feet when new and 162 feet in our final test. These numbers earn the Evo true sports-car credentials, and its driver-focused environment backs up that impression with big magnesium shift paddles on the steering column and deep, supportive Recaro seats for the front occupants. 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR - Car and Driver

Updating an automotive icon like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is an unenviable task. After three generations and nine versions—only the last two have been sold in the U. S. —the ultimate interpretation of a rally-car-for-the-street theme is difficult to improve on, but it's also getting a bit old. The answer is here in the form of the 10th-version, fourth-generation car, known as the Evolution X in Japan. it will simply be called the Lancer Evolution, but for the sake of clarity, we'll use the Roman numeral that signifies all things extreme in referring to the car. The Evo X is less communicative, larger, heavier, and slower compared with the previous Evo. If you're still with us, you'll be glad to know that the Evo X drives like nothing else in the world. But it's an all-new powerplant, designated 4B11. Design changes from the old 4G63 include an aluminum block rather than cast iron, a timing chain instead of a belt, and variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. The power figures of 295 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque are bumps of 9 and 11, respectively, and the new engine is lighter by 27. 5 pounds. The body is lighter, too, thanks to the aluminum roof, hood, front quarter-panels, and front and rear bumper beams. Source: www.caranddriver.com

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR - CNET News

Our desires for the car weren't diminished when we got our first chance to drive the MR version of the new Mitsubishi Evolution earlier this year, running it around the track at Laguna Seca. Mitsubishi offers a full range of tech in the cabin, as well, with a raucous Rockford Fosgate audio system, hard-drive navigation, and Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use. Test the tech: Evo and STI. The Mitsubishi Evo and the are the two top production rally cars, vying for trophies on muddy tracks all over the world. We reviewed the newest WRX STI earlier this year, so a comparison with the new Evo is in order. We took the Evo over that same road in similarly dry conditions to when we took the STI out. Both cars have intercooled, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, with the Evo getting 2 liters and the STI bumping up to 2. 5 liters. Where the Subaru makes 305 horsepower at 6,000rpm and 290 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000rpm, the Evo does 291 horsepower at 6,500rpm and 300 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000rpm. Given this power output, both cars also suffer from serious turbo lag, although the Subaru's seemed a little worse, as the higher torque figure in the Evo mitigates it a little. Source: www.cnet.com
