I'm not here to talk about those though, but about a number of 1990s cars so progressive that they helped shape not only the era they were born in, but the current car market as well. You're probably well aware that in almost every field that involves creativity, whether we're talking music, painting, writing or designing cars, standing the test of time is not easily achieved. Getting back to cars, you may not think much of some of the following models, but the truth is that without them we would have likely had a very different-looking market today, and not necessarily for the better. *youngtimer - a term mainly used in Germany for oldtimer cars that aren't that old. Technically, the first MX-5 Miata was unveiled in 1989, but everyone considers it as 1990s as "Saved by the Bell" or "Baywatch," which were both first aired in 1989 as well, coincidentally. In short, the small roadster resurrected the archetypal British roadster of the 1960s into a modern format, but it also re-introduced sports car fans to the basics of driving. We then heard more whooshing noise, which sounded like air rushing up above the dashboard as if it was air conditioning related, but this is working fine. Turbo air pipe popped off. (JP later wrote back: Fantastic thanks - there was indeed a pipe popped off the Jubilee clip – cured. Now just have to pay Peugeot to turn the engine management light off. Smart thinking I’m trying to sell my 99,600-mile 2004 Smart Roadster before the end of summer. It is in desirable red and silver, comes with a hardtop in the original bag, one owner from new, paddle shift, new Goodyear rear tyres, always garaged, 12 months MoT, well-maintained, everything works 100% including cruise control, CD/radio. To me the ‘value’ is around £3,000, give or take a couple of £100s either way for an exceptional car. However punters apparently think otherwise as on AutoTrader at an initial price of £3,595 (3 days) and £3,050 (7 days) the market clearly disagrees as 181 ‘website viewings’ have. It’s over thirty years since Mercedes-Benz launched its compact saloon, the 190 (or W201 in Mercedes speak), a car that was designed to go into battle against the hugely popular BMW 3-Series. In E30 form, the Beemer was the small saloon to have if you wanted to flaunt a premium badge, and Mercedes wanted a slice of the action. Made at a time when the Stuttgart manufacturers build quality made a nuclear shelter appear flimsy, the 190 took a much more staid approach to the business of transporting mid-ranking executives and while the 3-Series was considered a sporting... But what it does do though is work impeccably well, imparting a feeling of longevity that you simply don’t find in other cars of the era and while not a cabin to get the pulse racing there’s pleasure to be had from enjoying such well-executed... Still, the fuel-injected 2. 0-litre model made reasonable use of its 122bhp with a 0-60mph time of 10. 5 seconds, and if you wanted real pace there was always the racy Cosworth variants that boasted upwards of 185bhp.
