The guy looked at the Lexus IS350 Convertible sitting in my driveway and responded to my question by shaking his head as if a mosquito had just flown into his ear. Who wouldn’t want to put the top down and go for a ride in a convertible. His lips curled into a sneer and he said, “I don’t like convertibles. I had one when I was a teenager, and once was enough for me. ”. The middle-aged guy might have become a convertible fan for life had his first drop-top ride been a 2012 IS350 C like the one I was testing. Lexus’ IS C, offered in 250 or 350 trim, is an example of new-age convertibles. Unlike conventional convertibles, with cloth roofs draped over metal bars that fold like an accordion, the IS C is a hardtop convertible. Push the button again, and the top rises majestically, piece by piece, and reassembles itself into a roof. It took me at least twice that long just to think about the steps required to lower the top on my first convertible, a Triumph TR4a. If my friend’s first convertible was anything like mine, he has an excuse for never owning another. The chore of raising and lowering the Triumph’s top was compounded by the roof’s ineffectiveness. They Cost more than a Comparable soft top would, and, because the tops fold and store below deck, they leave you with appreciably less, top-down Cargo space than a Comparable, Conventional Convertible. This week's test car -- the Lexus IS C -- is a recent addition to the retractable segment, rolling into showrooms for the first time in 2010. It's offered in two models, with two featured engines. The IS 250C has a 2. 5 liter, 204 horsepower V-6. The six can be paired with either a six speed manual or automatic transmission. The engine is capable of a 0-60 time of 8. 4 seconds, and EPA fuel economy estimates are 19/27 (manual), 21/30 (automatic). It's fitted with the 3. 5 liter V-8, and the larger Lexus engine can only be had with the six speed automatic. Power ratings are 306 horsepower and 277 lb. ft. of torque, which is good enough to push the 3,880 lb. 350C to 60 mph from a standstill in 5. 8 seconds.
